The match between the KHE and Mathematics departments was a keenly contested
encounter, with KHE dominating possession but Mathematics creating more
chances. Maxwell Jerry of KHE received the first booking of the game due to a
silly foul in the 7th minute. The game was end-to-end as both defenses were on
top of their games. In the 20th minute, Ayoade Ruphus was penalized for an
infringement on a KHE player, resulting in a yellow card. The first half ended
goalless.
The second half began with a surge in possession by Mathematics, who had a
couple of chances, but the KHE goalkeeper was equal to the task. In the 49th
minute, Shakiru Awoyemi tested the Mathematics goalkeeper with a shot aimed at
the top right corner, but Opoola Abel was quick to react, punching the ball
over the crossbar for a KHE corner.
Both teams got tired as the match wore on, and neither was able to create much
in injury time. The match ended 0-0 at full time, leading to a penalty
shootout.
In the shootout, Mathematics scored their first two and fifth penalties but
missed their third and fourth owing to the great saves of Ayoola Blessing the
KHE goalkeeper. KHE missed their first penalty but went on to score the
remaining four, clinching the football gold medal of the 11th CUSPORF while
the Mathematics Department won the silver medal.
Earlier in the day, the English secured the male football bronze medal after
defeating Physics by 2 nil courtesy of goals from Songoyoyiwa Joshua and
Adepoju Samuel.
