LUCKY LANGUAGES EDGED WASTEFUL ASSAN IN AN INTERESTING OPENING MATCH OF THE 2024 FCEABITE SPORTS FESTIVAL

This year's FCEABITE Sports Festival commenced in grand fashion, with the Provost of the College, Dr. R. A. Soyele, officially kicking off the tournament in a memorable opening ceremony.

The School of Languages secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Art and Social Sciences (ASSAN) in a thrilling encounter.

The match started pretty well for ASSAN as they made some eye catching pass combinations ending with an off target shot. Aderogba Jelili was booked for a foul in the 10th minute, one minute later the first major opportunity of the match fell to the School of Languages in the minute when their forward tested ASSAN goalkeeper Egunjobi Hassan, who made a fine save to deny an early breakthrough.

Alina Caleb was shown the yellow card in the 14th minute for another foul while Ojebode Matthew of ASSAN was also booked in the 18th minute. However, in the 23rd minute Hassan was left stunned by a deceptive cross from Muftau, which floated into the top left corner, giving Languages the lead. Adebayo Boluwatife was also booked for a deliberate handball in the 29th minute as the first half came to a close.

Throughout the second half, ASSAN ramped up their efforts to find a way back into the game. They dominated possession, frequently pressing the Languages defense and striking the woodwork on several occasions. However, Languages' goalkeeper Owoade Festus delivered a stellar performance, making key saves and commanding his area with authority. His efforts earned him the Man of the Match honour, as he single-handedly preserved the lead.

The match ended 1-0 in favour of the School of Languages, who now look ahead to a crucial game against SUG on Wednesday, 9th September 2024, needing just a draw to secure a place in the semifinals. ASSAN, on the other hand, face a must-win match against SUG tomorrow, 8th September 2024, to keep their hopes alive of advancing from the group stage.
